People In Music History
Chopin, Frederic Francois [French form of Polish Fryderyk Franciszek] (1810
-1849) Polish composer and pianist of partly French descent. Born at Zelazowa
Wola, near Warsaw; studied in Warsaw; settled in Paris, touring from there
(e.g., to England and Scotland). Never revisited Poland (under Russian
occupation) but was keen patriot and student of Polish literature. Never
married; met George Sand (Aurore Dudevant) 1838, and lived with her until 1847;
suffered from consumption, gave his last public concert in 1848, and died in
Paris. Works -- nearly all for piano, and equally remarkable for harmonic
imagination and for use of piano technique -- include 3 sonatas (no. 2, in B
-flat minor, including a funeral march), 4 scherzos, 25 preludes, 27 studies,
19 nocturnes, 19 waltzes, 10 polonaises, at least 55 mazurkas (these and some
other works influenced by Polish music), 4 ballads; also 2 piano concertos,
sonata for cello and piano, songs, etc. Contributor to the hexameron.
